Breathing issues at any age are a major concern, but when they involve a newborn, the outcome can drastically change their future. Although some breathing issues clear up on their own, others may cause oxygen deprivation, organ damage, lifelong developmental issues, and other long-term disabilities.
The best way for medical teams to prevent serious concerns is to recognize potential problems early and be prepared to treat them right away. When medical teams aren’t prepared, it doesn’t take long for minor problems to become major ones.
Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) — Typically associated with premature births, RDS can cause major health issues in newborns. RDS can trigger oxygen deprivation that can lead to a wide range of long-term health problems.
Meconium Aspiration Syndrome (MAS) — Caused by a baby inhaling meconium-stained fluids, MAS blocks the airway and irritate of inflame the lungs. In severe cases, MAS can cause oxygen deprivation or Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE)
Newborn Pneumonia / Early-Onset Sepsis — Within the first 24-48 hours of birth, newborns may present with breathing issues that are related to pneumonia or sepsis. Treatment requires prompt administration of antibiotics and monitoring in the NICU.
Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN) — Potentially life-threatening, PPHN happens when the lungs fail to relax after birth, causing dangerously low oxygen levels. In some cases, the problem doesn’t improve with oxygen being delivered to the baby.
Pneumothorax (Air Leak Injury) — During birth, air can escape into places it shouldn’t, which can then cause compression to the lung. This can cause sudden, serious distress that can be life-threatening.
If your newborn suffered serious breathing issues during birth, the complications can last a lifetime. If the breathing issues took place during a delayed emergency delivery, problems with resuscitation, or fetal distress, you might be dealing with something more than a normal “complication.”
